Sinclair Patterns – Nova Hoodie

I’ve been on the hunt for a good raglan hoodie pattern. I’ve also been meaning to sew the Nova from Sinclair Patterns and I finally bit the bullet! I had to copy this hoodie that Amanda made (that Katie then copied). I, of course, had to also copy, a year and a half later nonetheless. This is a different fabric base and color way though…but still equally as lovely. The Nova was a great choice for it! I also think it might be in the running for a go-to hoodie pattern. The Nova is relaxed in the bust/waist and fitted at the hips with a bottom band or semi-fitted with a drawstring. It also has options for a neckband, hood or lined cowl.

Price: $9.99

Size Range: 16 sizes // 0-30 // 31.5″-59.8″ Bust // Petite, Regular, Tall

Options Sewn: Regular, size 4, hoodie

Fabric

I used all three colors (Pink, Mocha, Ivory) of the Wave Rib from Mily Mae Fabrics. (There are also a few more colors here.) I really like this fabric! It doesn’t feel like your typical rib since it’s heavier (mid-heavy weight 230GSM) and the ribbing is different than your typical rib. This has a wavy texture and I love it! It’s a Poly/Rayon/Spandex blend with a soft hand, as well as great drape and recovery. I may or may not have ordered some of the Mint colorway for another hoodie because really, can one have too many?! Since this fabric meets the stretch requirements for the cuffs, I was able to use it for the whole thing. I got 1 yard of each color except Ivory, of which I got 1/2 yards.

Recommended Fabric: Medium to heavy weight knit fabric with at least 20-30% horizontal and vertical stretch. 30-50% stretch and good recovery for bands

Instructions

I’ve made plenty of hoodies and raglans, so I don’t really follow patterns to the T very often. I basically check the seam allowance and run with it. Since this has a hood, I did follow the specific instructions for that. The only place I had issues were the notches. The notch for the center front made sense but the notches for the sleeve seam seemed off. So I went rogue and quartered the neck opening and then quartered the hood after I matched the center notch. I’m really not sure if that made too much of a difference with how the hood lays while wearing. I’m just going to have to sew this again and re-assess that part in the instructions.

Pattern

DID IT LOOK LIKE THE PATTERN PHOTO/DRAWING ON THE PATTERN ONCE YOU WERE DONE SEWING?

Yes it does!

WHAT DID YOU PARTICULARLY LIKE OR DISLIKE ABOUT THE PATTERN?

I really like the fit. I’m still torn on how I feel about crossover hoods, but that is more me than the actual pattern. I also really like how long the sleeve cuffs are!

WOULD YOU SEW IT AGAIN? WOULD YOU RECOMMEND IT TO OTHERS?

I definitely will be sewing it again! Just be wary of the hood notches, but other than that I can’t recall any major issues. Totally worth it if you are looking for a raglan sweater/hoodie pattern.
