Constance Sew Along – Day 2: Colorblock Prep

Hello and welcome to day 2 of the Constance Sew Along! If you are just tuning in, you can use the links above to get started and jump between posts. (Note: all of the sew along posts are pre-linked but they won’t go live until that day of the sew along)

Hopefully you are now a little more comfortable grading your pattern. With that out of the way, how about some colorblocking! With your pattern now graded, we will be using that to make our new colorblock template for the Constance. Anytime I see a picture or an ad on the internet or even a post on Instagram, I try to save it to my Sewing Inspiration board on Pinterest or my Sewing Inspo story highlights on instagram. These are both great places to keep your ideas a little more organized, especially since I’m usually not ready to sew up an inspo as soon as I spot it! But if I don’t save it somewhere, I’ll totally forget about it…oops! Here are the three colorblocking inspirations I’ll be showing you how I recreated with the Constance. Today we will just be prepping our pattern pieces and I’ll have another video with cutting and sewing them up on Day 4.

Diagonal Colorblock Hack

I think this Diagonal colorblock hack is one of my favorites! I did size down one for a slightly more fitted top and lengthened the sleeves to the elbow cuff cutline, but hemmed it. This inspo photo also is a lot shorter than the Constance, so you you are welcome to cut the bottom a tad shorter if you want to copy the inspo photo, or leave it as is. The great thing about sewing is you can do whatever you want!

I used Wide Butterfly Rib from Mily Mae Fabric for the top and White Pointelle for the bottom (which is currently sold out).

Tri Colorblock Hack

So, originally I was going to sew up a different tri color combo for this hack but then I just really was loving the grey and black combo! But the only fabric I had on hand in that combo was this Cashmere Waffle Knit, which I love oh so much! So because of this, I switched my original plan and sewed it as a hoodie instead of a shirt with a curved hem.

The only thing I would slightly change is to move the colorblocking line down a smidge than what I did in the video. It will just make it a little bit easier to sew up.

Sleeve Colorblock Hack

We went to Utah over Christmas last year to visit our family. One of the day’s we were there, my sister was wearing the green shirt on the left. I LOVED it and thought, I should try to hack that! I asked her to send me a picture of her shirt and here we are! This one was a little tricky to figure out at first. (It would have been 10 times easier to do this hack on a raglan.) I really like how it turned out though and I plan on making a few others (but I’ll probably skip the pocket).
